Character Information
Name: Ivan Afanasievich Braginski | The Russian Federation
Canon Origin/Series: Axis Powers: Hetalia
School Year: Sixth
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Out of school living location: Edinburgh, Scotland
Blood status: Pureblood

Personality:

Ivan’s a bit of a silent guy, one who tends to greet the world with a smile even if the situation doesn’t call for it. In fact, he tends to quite easily fit the “sweet and innocent” look his face holds, but he’s not actually all that innocent. While he’s learned to hide himself behind carefully guarded smiles and to keep his emotions in check, he’s incredibly emotive. For one, he easily becomes flustered when paid a compliment and due to the admittedly recent pride he’s gathered, Ivan also tends to get a bit big headed. But due to his cynical and somewhat jaded nature, he doesn’t tend to stay that way for very long.

In addition, Ivan’s incredibly stubborn and will not back down on a topic he believes himself to be right in, even if he can come to realize that he was in fact wrong. He can argue until he and the other person are blue in the face and keep on going. Tying into this topic, Ivan can be quick to anger, though for the most part he’s gotten a hold on that part and simply simmers for long stretches of time until things bubble up and he snaps. His anger is icy and he tends to hurl insults with just as much weight behind them as his punches.

Luckily for the world, perhaps, is the fact that Ivan is actually really patient and he will deal with things for far longer than the normal teenager might be able to. Once he runs out, however, there’s a firestorm on the way and it’s likely several things will wind up broken in the crossfire. He also tends to lapse into his native Russian when angry and can still manage to verbally flay someone in a language they don’t understand and have it come across as just as threatening, if not more.

Despite it all, however, is the fact that Ivan’s pretty mellow and actually a relatively calm sort of guy. He would prefer it if people got over stupid ideas and didn’t bug him, but if they can at least keep it to themselves he’s fine with it. He’s a pretty gentle guy when it can come down to it and he’s incredibly family oriented. He’d give nearly everything in a heartbeat if his family asked for it and would go to severe lengths for them. This goes for the few friends he truly trusts, as those people he usually winds up considering as family anyway. Ivan is a sweetheart then, and if one didn’t know he could be just as vicious as a Hungarian Horntail on a rampage, it’s quite likely he would be considered to be nearly too good.

Ivan’s intellect is put to good use in school, and his ambition is slow burning. He doesn’t necessarily want fame or power or riches, he wants to build himself up until he can best help his family and he has just enough ambition to fuel him towards this goal.

Canon Background: Character wikia here! as well as an admittedly long history I typed up here
Background (AU!Canon; HP):

[Paranormal]Ivan was born to a pureblood family living in Tver, Russia on December 30th, 1996. Given his pureblood state, Ivan was raised in a world fairly filled with magic. But unfortunately for him, his magic lay dormant for the first years of his life much to the disdain of his traditionalist grandparents on his father’s side. In fact, it would be much the same on his mother’s side if she hadn’t gone through the same thing when she was a child. But Ivan’s magic stayed hidden until he was six and by that time his parents and maternal grandparents were distraught, paternal grandparents electing to give him a bit of a cold shoulder while doting on his two sisters who were both showing magic. This hurt him deeply, especially since his younger sister was barely a toddler and already showing some signs of magic. This led to strife within the family, as the longer Ivan went without showing magic the more displeased his paternal grandparents became. Ivan was the heir of the Braginski family after all and if he was a squib then his grandparents wanted him to be disowned so that inheritance would skip over him.

Luckily for Ivan, his parents were not inclined to follow this ideal and told them no. Even luckier for Ivan, was the fact that during one of his grandparents’ visits to try and convince his parents otherwise, his magic kicked in. It wasn’t a simple thing, like a pen flying across the room, or perhaps a chair levitating. No, it was a full on storm, items flinging themselves around, cabinets whipping open and closed as his slow burning fury turned in on itself and simply continued to grow exponentially. His magic, however, wasn’t controlled and this led to things hurling themselves not only at his grandparents but also at his parents. It didn’t seem as if he’d stop until he wore himself into exhaustion, but right as things were beginning to turn for the worst Ivan’s older sister flung herself through the doorway and threw her arms around the boy, tears streaming down her face. The effect was almost immediate, items falling from midair as Ivan wrapped his arms around his sister and cried.

And in the middle it all it was mutually decided that maybe it’d be a good idea if those grandparents of his didn’t visit for a bit.

This decision didn’t need to last very long, however, because within a year the Braginski family was moving out of Russia and settling in Edinburgh, Scotland. There were a few reasons behind this, things like job offers and tutors but it was never talked about that it might have been guided by the fact that Ivan’s parents and his paternal grandparents were still at odds. More so, it was also because Ivan’s magic was still wildly out of control and random. Edinburgh was a vastly different sort of place when compared to Tver and in addition to Ivan’s shyness and the problems his magic presented, he also knew very little english. These things led to Ivan and his sisters being something of outcasts and quite frequently the source of jokes which really didn’t help him gain control over his magic. Ivan was kind of a cry baby, after all.

His family was the only thing that made it bearable and Ivan spent a lot of time around his house instead of out with children his age. He would frequently cling to his mother’s skirts and learn how to garden and knit and cook from her, things that were thought of as too feminine for a boy to enjoy. But he liked them and he liked the way his mother would smile when he got something right so it was okay. His father was a bit of a distant figure, too caught up in his own thoughts, but he was very warm when his family could manage to drag him out. All in all, they were an incredibly happy family.

Which unfortunately, ended all too soon with the death of Ivan’s mother. She’d been sick for a while, but had hidden it rather well from her children. Unfortunately, by the time Ivan was nine, she had passed away. The family took it very hard and nearly fell apart as their father forgot to do chores and feed the children and himself and it was only for Ivan’s older sister stepping up and becoming a bit of a surrogate mother to the two younger children that they managed to survive. The only good things that came out of this was the tightening of familial bonds and the gain of steely control Ivan worked himself into developing over his magic. Come the next two years before Hogwarts he worked extensively to keep himself calm and his magic in control and he succeeded. In addition, Ivan helped to raise his youngest sister who was still very young and helped to make sure the family was okay.

With the loss of a strong maternal figure and the stumbling of his father’s state given the death of his wife, Ivan stepped up to take care of things his mother had taught him to do. He mended clothes, gardened and did chores alongside his sister and when neighborhood children taunted them, he become better at holding back his anger and got back to them in other ways. Though there were still a few that bore faintly crooked noses from where he’d broken bone.

This is how things progressed for the two years preceding Ivan’s acceptance into Hogwarts and it’s how things are on holiday breaks as well. But in Hogwarts, Ivan quickly found a niche for himself as a loner. He was acquaintances with many, friends with few, and was perfectly fine with that. He could work well in the background and few people paid much attention to shadows. So this is how he’s gone about his years at school, placing easily in the upper ranks of his classes and excelling where he could.

Given his familiarity with them, classes such as Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures came easily to Ivan, he found it calming to work with beings who didn’t necessarily talk back. If that was the only thing known about him, it would seem as if he was a “gentle giant” who would probably never hurt a fly. However, Ivan’s best subject is Defense and he is rather powerful and creative with the spells. Likewise, Transfiguration was one of his better subjects, though he had a tendency to reach changes or use items not in the usual manner. Charms would be the course he struggled most with, unable to really grasp several of the concepts or level of magic behind them. For instance, his feather caught on fire during his first attempt at Wingardium Leviosa and his second try had it icing over and shattering.

Though he enjoyed the feeling of being in the air, Ivan was not one for sport such as Quiddich (though he would make a decent beater) and therefore didn’t attempt to join the team. This suits him fine and he occasionally goes for a fly by himself to enjoy the feel of air in his hair if nothing else.

Due to his success in his classes and his ability to keep to himself and keep calm despite the sometimes hectic nature of Hogwarts, Ivan become more sure of himself and his capabilities. There’s a bit of arrogance to his walk these days, and he’s not against showing his biting humor and personality if provoked. There’s ambition combining with that arrogance of his, but Ivan knows he can easily back it up and he’s not above showing his strength if he really needs to. How would your character fit in to each House?

Gryffindor:

Ivan’s not the cowardly sort of guy, he’s been through life having to buck up and deal with his own problems and as such he’s actually pretty brave. But he’s not foolhardy and he’s most certainly not one to stick his neck out for everyone. Or many, rather.

Hufflepuff:

Ivan’s an incredibly loyal guy, almost to a fault really! But his loyalty is also limited. He’s all for sticking up for his friends and family and will actually go to incredible lengths for his precious people, but likewise, those he’s not particularly fond of or close to will find him cold and nearly callous. He doesn’t really give a damn, it’s all about himself and his precious people. However, Ivan’s not against hard work and he’s constantly pushing himself much like a Hufflepuff might.

Ravenclaw:

As an incredibly intelligent young man, Ivan would certainly fit in with the ravens. He’s witty, smart, and more than likely to quip back. But at the same time, the knowledge Ivan seeks and craves is not merely for the sake of being known, but for the sake of being used. He looks up things to better improve himself and his chances. As well as doing so to protect his family. He’s the type of guy who embraces knowledge and quickly absorbs it, though it can sometimes simply fall by the wayside if he finds no use for it.

Slytherin:

Slytherin is the house of ambition and Ivan has that in spades. He’s the type of man who plots and twists things to better benefit himself. As mentioned before, Ivan is incredibly intelligent, but he’s also cunning. Part of this could be because of his tendency to Lone Ranger it up, as Ivan tends to bottle things up and hide behind a mask. He’s not one to let people in and let them see how he feels/what he knows/ect. and that shows in Ivan’s actions. He frequently hides things about himself, hiding thoughts and ideas but if they benefit him he will pull out all the carefully constructed stops to figure out what might work best.

Third Person Sample:
Breakfast is a nearly tawdry affair at Hogwarts, with noise levels threatening to burst as people attempted to talk over each other even though many people were busy trying not to fall asleep in their porridge. Ivan didn’t exactly have that problem but he was not fond of mornings as several of his classmates were. In addition, if his neighbor wouldn’t stop jabbering in his ear he’d find himself acquainted with the shiny splendor that was Hogwart’s dishes.

Perhaps it’s the dark aura that Ivan seems to give off as his neighbor kept on blathering about increasingly inane things, or maybe it’s the way his fingers twitch around his spoon as if he wants to jab it into their skin. But the boy falls silent with a stuttered “u-uhm..” and inches away enough to give Ivan some breathing room.

Much better, and as the morning mail filters in and a large barn owl perches on his shoulder with a letter from his sisters in tow, Ivan settles in to enjoy his breakfast. He had a busy day ahead of him after all, class and practicing those charms he couldn’t quite get right. It wouldn’t do to start off on a bad foot, he muses as he slips pieces of bacon to his owl. Both appetites taken care of, Ivan snagged the book bag he’d left next to his feet and stood; perhaps he’d take advantage of the silence in the rest of the school and find an empty classroom to practice in.

It’s only as he’s taking the stairs and rubbing just under his owl’s beak does Ivan realize that he’s heading the wrong way. Ah well, mistakes happen, and he had enough time to turn around and head back the otherway. The silence in the school and the soft little coos were more than pleasant, and he hardly minded the walk. See, he was rather fond of mornings, after all.
